Collection of fifty most interesting and picturesque views of the Rhine, from Speyer to Düsseldorf, drawn from nature by L. Janscha ... and engraved by Ziegler
User Collection PublicOriginally published by Artaria & Co., in 1798, this facsimile reprint of the collection of fifty art engravings illustrates the villages, ruins, and environs along the Rhine River as they might have appearing during Beethoven's youth. The artist, Laurens Janscha (1749-1812), was born in Hungary but moved to Vienna to study at the Academy of Fine Arts (Akademie der bildenden Künste), where he later became a professor. His collaborator for this collection, the engraver Johann Ziegler (1750-1812), also studied at the Vienna academy. Ziegler collaborated with Janscha and Karl Schutz (1745-1800) to produce engravings of Vienna and its environs as well. In addition to being a leading printer of art engravings in Vienna, Artaria & Co. was the music publisher to whom Beethoven sold several of his first compositions after settling in Vienna in 1792.
