Plate 43. Pleasure palace of the Elector of Cologne at Brühl
Color engraving of the Elector's pleasure palace (Augustusburg) at Brühl near Bonn. The scenic area of Brühl, just north of Bonn, was the location of the Augustusburg Palace built in the 18th century. In his diary from 1812–1818, Beethoven wrote, "Brühl . . . how lovely to see my native country again!" However, Beethoven might have also been referring to the Brühl near Mödling, one of his favorite country villages near Vienna.

- Description in German / English translation: Drey von Bonn und zwey Meilen von Köln liegt das auf diesem Blatte vorgestellte Lustschloss. Es hat seinen Namen von dem kleinen Städtchen Brühl, von welchem hier ein Theil rückwärts des Schlosses zu sehen ist; doch wird es auch die Augustsburg genannt, weil es von Clemens August im Jahre 1725 erbaut wurde. Obwohl es vom Rheine entfernt ist, so ist doch die Lage ungemein reizend, und man athmet hier reine Luft. Das Innere des Pallastes entspricht dem äussern Anblicke, und verkündet Pracht und Grösse. Man sieht hier die prächtigsten Brüssler-Tapeten und viele Meisterstücke des Pinsels. Das hier vorgestellte Wasser ist ein Teich, der einen Theil dieses Schlosses umgibt, und zur Lustfahrt dienet. Zur Linken stösst der grosse Park an, der eine Menge Wild enthält, und wo sich unter andern merkwürdigen Gegenständen ein mit Geschmacke erbautes Chinesisches Lusthaus befindet. Endlich kommt man durch diesen Park nach dem kleinen Schlosse Falkenlust, das zur Reigerbeize bestimmt ist, und wo Bequemlichkeit sich mit einer zierlichen Simplicität vereinigt. / The Pleasure Palace introduced on this leaf is located three miles from Bonn and two from Cologne. It derives its name from the little town Brühl, part of which can be seen behind the castle; but the castle is also called Augustsburg since it was built by Clemens August in 1725. Although not close to the Rhine its location is uncommonly lovely and one breathes clean air here. The interior of the palace complements the exterior view and projects splendor and greatness. One can see the most splendid Brussels tapestry and many masterpieces of the brush. The patch of water in front is a pond which surrounds part of the castle and serves for pleasure boating. Adjacent to the left is the large park which contains a lot of game and where among many other noteworthy things a tastefully built Chinese pleasure house can be found. Finally, one reaches the little Castle Falkenlust, dedicated to falconry, and where comfort is joined with a graceful simplicity.
