- Description in German / English translation: Unter den Merkwürdigkeiten von Köln verdient die Domkirche den vorzüglichsten Platz. Man sieht sie hier vorgestellt, wie sie über die Häuser des Domplatzes hervor ragt. Der Churfürst Conrad von Hochsteden fing im Jahre 1248 den Bau an, und noch 1499 ward daran gearbeitet. Wäre der grosse Plan vollendet worden, so ware diese Kirche das schönste Denkmahl des Gothischen Geschmackes, so wie ein erstaunenswürdiges Monument von der Kühnheit des menschlichen Geistes. Nach dem entworfenen Plane sollten beyde Thürme eine Höhe von 500 Schuh erreichen; der eine aber, der hier auf dem Blatte nicht sichtbar ist, ragt kaum 20 Schuh über seine Grundfeste hervor, und der andre, in welchem sich unter andern eine Glocke von 225 Centnern befindet, hat kaum die Höhe von 150 Schuh erreicht. Man erblickt auf diesem noch das Gerüst, durch welches die Steine aufgezogen wurden; aber schwerlich dürfte dieser Bau bey den nun so veränderten Geschmacke mehr vollendet werden. Hinter dem Hauptaltare ist die berühmte Kapelle, in welcher die Leiber der heiligen drey Könige aufbewahrt werden. Sie ist von Marmor, und ward vom Churfürsten Maximilian erbaut. Noch eine andere Merkwürdigkeit dieser Kirche ist das Chor, mit einem Altar, der nach Römischer Art aus einem einzigen Stück Marmor besteht, und16 Schuh lang und 8 breit ist. / Among the noteworthy attractions in Cologne, pride of place belongs to the Dom (Cathedral). It is depicted here, towering over the houses of the Dom square. The Elector Conrad von Hochsteden started the building, and work was still going on in 1499. If the great plan would have been completed the church would have been the most beautiful monument to the Gothic taste, and an astonishing monument to the audacity of the human spirit. According to the plan both towers should have reached a height of 500 feet; but the one not visible on this page is barely taller than 20 feet, and the other one, which contains among other things a bell weighing 225 hundredweights, barely reaches a height of 150 feet. One can still see the scaffolding used to hoist up the stones; but this building will hardly be completed now, given the changed taste of the time. Behind the main altar is the famous chapel which contains the corpses of the Three Magi. It is made of marble and was built by the Elector Maximilian. Another attraction is the choir with an altar in the Roman style, made from a single piece of marble 16 feet long and 8 feet wide.
