Plate 10. View of the village of Bacharach
Color engraving with a view of Bacharach, the Electoral Palatinate town on the Rhine, and the ruins of the Castle Stahleck. The name of this village, which points to its Celtic roots, comes from Bacchus, the Roman god of wine. According to the caption for this engraving, it was known for its superior Rhine wines. Like Oberwesel and other areas along the Rhine here, Bacharach temporarily came under French rule after it was occupied during the French Revolution.
