7. Bonn's Musical Life

In Beethoven's youth Bonn was a small town with a population of around ten thousand, compared with around a quarter of a million in Vienna. Bonn nevertheless had a thriving music scene that centered on the Electoral court, and Beethoven was clearly shaped by the rich musical environment of his youth. During his time as an employee at the Bonn court, Beethoven participated in performances of opera, symphonies, chamber music and church music. The Elector Maximilian Franz was a great lover of music, and under his reign the Bonn court produced many of the latest works from Vienna, including Mozart's operas which Beethoven got to know as a violist in the opera orchestra.
