Exhibited: The Beethovens on the Rhine (2020). Exhibition text: As a young child, Beethoven was already so accomplished as a keyboard player that his father Johann presented him at a public concert in Cologne in 1778, when he was seven years old. No information survives about the “various clavier concertos and trios” that Beethoven played on this occasion. In the announcement, his father incorrectly gave Beethoven’s age as six. He may have deliberately exaggerated Beethoven’s youth to make the concert more marketable, since there was a vogue for child prodigy performers: a decade earlier Mozart and his sister had toured Europe as child prodigies.
