This silhouette of Beethoven in his court uniform is one of only two contemporary images of him as a child. Like all employees of the court, Beethoven wore servants’ livery when performing official duties. His uniform consisted of a green frock-coat and breeches, black or white silk stockings, shoes tied with black bows, an embroidered vest with gold cord, a wig with a braid, and a little sword on a silver belt. As a member of the court Kapelle, Beethoven performed various duties, including performing on the organ for church services, playing chamber music, and playing viola in the theater orchestra.
