Plate 41. View of the palace of the Elector of Cologne in Bonn

Color engraving of the Elector's palace in Bonn. Bonn was the seat of the Elector of Cologne, one of the seven Prince-Electors of the Holy Roman Empire. Since the middle ages, the Prince-Electors were nominally responsible for electing the next Holy Roman Emperor on the death of the previous one. The election was merely symbolic, however, since the imperial crown was passed down through the Austrian House of Habsburg. The buildings of the former Elector's palace in Bonn today form part of the University of Bonn.
