  • Exhibited: The Beethovens on the Rhine (2020). Exhibit text: According to Fischer, the areas east of the Rhine visited by Beethoven and his father included Honnef, Siegburg, Bensberg, and Oberkassel. Oberkassel is now a suburb on Bonn, but in Beethoven’s day it was a four-mile walk along the road to Königswinter, or a short boat trip along the Rhine. It lies at the edge of the Siebengebirge (Seven Mountains). According to Fischer (as reported by Thayer), Beethoven gained patronage of a “Herr von Meinertzhagen, who had an estate in Oberkassel.” This likely referred to the Electoral Palatine Council Johann Gernard von Meinertzhagen, who leased a plot of land there in 1750 and in 1764 had the “Lippeschen Hof” built. In 1770, the year Beethoven was born, Oberkassel and other nearby villages suffered from severe weather that resulted in loss of its fruit crops and a serious famine the following winter. Honnef was located six more miles south of Bonn, near the Rhine island Nonnenwerth. A fire in 1773 destroyed the nunnery at Nonnenwerth, but it was rebuilt by 1775 in a Baroque style. At that time, Honnef was mostly known as a wine-region, but after the discovery of a mineral spring in 1897 it transformed into a spa town.
