Plate 30. View of Unkel
Color engraving with a panoramic view of the small village of Unkel, on the Rhine. According to historians, during Beethoven's youth a journey up and down the Rhine and Main would have been too tedious and too expensive for individual travelers. Only small boats and barges could move forward against the current with their sails. Ships had to be hauled by up to 90 people or up to 18 horses using the towpaths or towpaths along the rivers.
