Plate 36. Ruins of Godesberg not far from Bonn
Color engraving of the Godesberg castle ruins near Bonn, along the Rhine. In 1824, Ferdinand Ries purchased an estate in Godesberg and invited Beethoven to visit. Beethoven's reply reveals something about this longing for a country home in his beloved Rhineland: "I take the deepest interest in your property in Godesberg; no one could have a more envious joy over it than I whose deepest desire would be realized by such a property. However, it appears that my destiny is not to quite the way I want it."
