- Description in German / English translation: Diese Stadt, welche die gewöhnliche Residenz der Churfürsten von der Pfalz war, liegt gerade an der Spitze, wo der Rhein den Neckar zu sich nimmt. Auch sie ward von den Franzosen im Jahre 1689 von Grund aus zerstört, und erst nach dem Ryswickischen Frieden unter dem Churfürsten Johann Wilhelm wieder erbaut, der sie im Jahre 1710 noch mehr vergrössern und erweitern liess. Unter Carl Philipp erhielt sie erst 1721 ihre ganze jetzige Gestalt. Ihre Lage ist ungemein angenehm. Man sieht hier zur Linken das Churfürstliche Schloss, das unter die schönsten Gebäude von Europa gehört; obwohl man die Regeln der Baukunst nicht immer an demselben beobachtet findt. Der Rheinstrom lauft hinter dem Schlosse hin, und bespühlt die Festungswerker. Unter den öffentlichen Platzen zeichnet sich der Markt und der Paradeplatz aus. Man zählt dort 7 katholische Kirchen, eine protestantische und zwey reformirte; auch besitzen die Juden dort eine Synagoge. Die Zahl der Einwohner belief sich vormals auf 25000: seitdem aber Carl Theodor seine Residenz nach München verlegt hatte, nahm Bevölkerung und Handel sehr ab. / This city, which was the main residence of the Elector of the Palatine, is located right at the tip where the Rhine receives the Neckar. It too was totally destroyed by the French in 1689 and was only rebuild under Elector Johann Wilhelm after the Peace of Ryswick. In 1710 he enlarged it further. Only under Carl Philipp in 1721 was the city given its current shape. Its location is exceptionally pleasant. To the left one sees here the Electoral Palace, which counts among the most beautiful buildings in Europe; although the rules of the art of building are not always observed. The River Rhine passes behind the palace and laps at the fortifications. Among the public squares, the Market and the Parade Square are noteworthy. The city has seven Catholic churches, one Protestant, and one Reformed; the Jews have a synagogue there, too. The number of inhabitants was around 25,000, but since Carl Theodor moved his residence to Munich, population and trade declined considerably.
