- Description in German / English translation: Fast in der Mitte dieses Blattes sieht man auf einer kleinen Insel, oder vielmehr einem Felsen, den so berufenen Mäusethurm, über dessen Ursprung sehr viel Fabelhaftes behauptet wird. Einige lassen ihn vom Erzbischofe Willigis, andere vom Hatto II den die Mäuse frassen, erbaut seyn; die Vernünftigern aber halten dafür, dass dieser Thurm bloss zur Sicherheit der Rheinfahrt sey angelegt worden; dass er deswegen auch Mauththurm geheissen habe, und dass nur eine abergläubische Tradition daraus Mausthurm machte. Zwischen diesem Thurme und dem gegenüber liegenden Bergschlosse Ehrenfels, sieht man im Rheine das so genannte Bingerloch. Die Fahrt ist aber hier nicht so gefährlich als man sagt. Bey kleinem Wasser fährt man am rechten Ufer hin, und weichet dem Wirbel aus; bey grossem Wasser aber kann man ohne alle Gefahr darüber weg schiffen. Der Wein, der um das Schloss Ehrenfels herum wächst, ist der beste in der ganzen Gegend von Rüdesheim. / Nearly in the middle of this leaf one can see a little island, or maybe just a rock, the so-called Mouse Tower, about whose origins many outrageous things have been told. Some claim that Archbishop Willigis built it, others that Hatto II, who was eaten by mice; the more reasonable ones counter that this tower’s function was to ensure the safety of travel on the river and was thus named Mauthturm (toll tower), and that only superstitious tradition converted this to Mäuseturm (Mouse Tower). Between this tower and the mountain castle Ehrenfels one can find in the Rhine the so-called Binger Loch (Bingen Hole). Travel down the Rhine, however, is not as dangerous as claimed. At low water level one steers towards the right bank and avoids the whirlpool; at high water level one can steer across it without any problems. The wine grown around castle Ehrenfels is among the best in the whole region of Rüdesheim.
