Exhibited: The Beethovens on the Rhine (2020). Exhibition text: This painting shows young Maximilian Franz, the future Elector, arriving in Bonn for an official visit during the reign of the Elector Maximilian Friedrich. As was customary, the liveried employees of the court were on display during the ceremonial arrival at the palace. At these occasions the court musicians, who at this time included Beethoven’s father Johann, would also be required to line up in uniform alongside the other servants and officials of the court.
