Plate 05. View of Oestrich towards Mittelheim and the castle Johannisberg
Color engraving with a view of the village of Oestrich on the Rhine, towards the town of Mittelheim and the Johannisberg castle. One of the main landmarks in Oestrich is the wine-loading crane that was erected in the 18th century for loading and unloading ships. Completed in 1745, it was still in operation until 1926.

- Description in German / English translation: Diess ist abermal eines von den lachenden und abwechselnden Gemählden des reizenden Rheingau. Nachdem der Rhein Erbach vorbey gelaufen hat, kommt er nach Östrich oder Estrich, einen ansehnlichen Flecken, wo die Herren von Marquard ein adeliges Gut besitzen. Er bestreichet dann das hier zur Rechten vorgestellte Dorf Mittelheim, welches eine ansehnliche Pfarrkirche hat. Hier fängt eine Reihe von auf einander gethürmten Terrassen an, die unmerklich bis zur Probstey von St.Johannesberg führen, der auch Bischofsberg genannt wird, und hier zur Rechten vorgestellt ist. Sie ward im Jahre 1102 von Ruthard dem II, Erzbischofe zu Maynz, gestiftet, und vom Erzbischofe Adelbert I im Jahre 1130 in eine Abtey verwandelt. In der Folge ward sie an den Abt von Fulda verkauft, der sie wieder zur Probstey machte, und so wohl das Kloster als die Kirche in modernem Geschmacke und ungemeiner Pracht herstellen liess . Sie sieht nun mehr einem fürstlichen Schlosse als einem Kloster ähnlich. Die Aussicht ist bezaubernd; sie beherrscht die ganze Gegend des Rheingau, durch welches sich der Rhein nur langsam durch mehrere Inseln hin, välzt. Noch gehört diess zu den Merkwürdigkeiten dieser Probstey, dass sie gleichsam die Vorrathskammer des vortrefflichsten Rheingauerweines ist. / This is another one of the delightful and varied scenes of the Rhinegau. After the Rhine passes Erbach it reaches Östrich (or Estrich), a handsome, small town, where the Lords von Marquard own a noble estate. It touches then the village Mittelheim, depicted here on the right. It has a handsome Parish church. Here starts a series of sequential terraces which lead imperceptibly to the St. Johannisberg provosty, also called Bishop’s Mountain. It can be seen here on the right. It was founded in 1102 by Ruthard II, Archbishop of Mainz, and converted to an abbey by Archbishop Adalbert I in 1130. Later it was sold to the Abbot of Fulda, who converted it back to a provosty and remade both the monastery and the church according to modern taste and exceptional splendor. It looks now more like a princely castle than a monastery. The view is enchanting; the building dominates the whole region of the Rhinegau, through which the Rhine moves only slowly through several islands. It is also noteworthy that the provosty is rather like the pantry of the superb Rhinegau wine.
