Plate 11. View of the old Palatinate or the Castle Grafenstein by Kaub.
Color engraving with a view of the Pfalzgrafenstein Castle (Burg Pfalzgrafenstein) on the Falkenau Island in the Rhine, near the village of Kaub. The most famous landmark in Caub is the Castle Pfalz shown here, which is located on a rock in the middle of the Rhine. Like other fortresses along the Rhine, its original function was to serve as a toll gate for merchant ships passing through.
