- Description in German/English translation: Diese Stadt leitet ihren Namen von dem kleinen Wässerchen Speyerbach her, der sich durch die Stadt in den Rhein ergiesst. Sie liegt im Bissthum Speyer im oberrheinischen Kreise am Rheinstrome, und ist eine freye Reichsstadt. Im Jahre 1689 ward sie von den Franzosen völlig zerstort, nach dem Ryswickischen Frieden aber neuerdings wieder aufgebaut. In Speyer befinden sich 15 katholische Kirchen, obwohl die Zahl der katholischen Bürger sich nur auf ungefahr 30 beläuft. Die vorzüglichste ist der Dom, den man hier zur Linken erblickt. Er ist in gothischem Geschmack erbaut, und ward im Jahre 1061 von Kaiser Heinrich IV vollendet. Die Protestanten besitzen die Kirche, die auf diesem Blatte zur Rechten mit den vier Thürmen angezeichnet ist, und erst 1717 erbaut wurde. Das Land umher ist fruchtbar an Getreide, und hat auch guten Weinwachs. Speyer besitzt auch das Stapelrecht, und trieb vor seiner Zerstörung auch einen grossen Handel mit Mandeln und Kastanien. / Translation: This city derives its name from the creek Speyer, a little body of water which flows through the city into the Rhine. It is located in the Speyer bishopric in the Upper Rhine region on the Rhine, and it is a free imperial city. The French completely destroyed it in 1689, but it was rebuilt after the Peace of Ryswick. There are 15 Catholic churches in Speyer, although there are only around 30 Catholic citizens. The most magnificent is the cathedral, which can be seen to the left. It is built in the gothic style and was completed in 1061 by Emperor Henry IV. The church which can be seen with its four towers on the right is owned by the Protestants. It was built only in 1717. The countryside is very fertile with grain, and wine also. Speyer also owns a storage right, and before its destruction it had a lively trade in almonds and chestnuts.
