Plate 07. View of the city of Bingen
Color engraving of the city of Bingen, on the Rhine. Musicians and historians will recognize Bingen as the birthplace of Saint Hildegard, a prominent medieval composer. Klopp Castle, situated in the hills above the town, was like many other fortresses mostly destroyed in the late 17th century.

- Description in German / English translation: Drey Meilen von Maynz entfernt, liegt in einer reizenden Lage die Stadt Bingen, die auf diesem Blatte vorgestellt ist. Ihr Ursprung verliert sich ins graue Alterthum, und nach einigen Schriftstellern stand sie schon vor Christi Geburt. Man sieht in ihren Ringmauern die Ruinen von dem alten Schlosse Klopp , das im Jahre 1689 von den Franzosen ganz zerstört wurde. Zur Rechten zeigt sich eine steinerne Brücke, die über den Fluss Nahe gespannt ist, der sich hier in den Rhein ergiefst. Einige nennen sie die Drususbrücke, weil man behauptet, dass sie Drusus Germanicus erbaut habe. Andere sind der Meinung, dass Willigis, der erste Churfürst von Maynz, der Stifter davon sey. Der hier zur Rechten liegende Berg heisst der Rupertsberg. Man sieht auf demselben die Trümmer von einem Frauenkloster, das im Jahre 1148 die H. Hildegardis gestiftet hatte. Seit 1631, wo es zum zweyten Mahl abbrannte, ist es ganz verfallen. / Three miles from Mainz, one can find, in a pretty location, the city of Bingen, depicted on this leaf. Its origin is lost in grey antiquity, and according to some sources it already existed before the birth of Christ. At its city walls one can find the ruins of the old Castle Klopp, completely destroyed by the French in 1689. At the right can be seen the stone bridge, spanning the River Nahe which enters the Rhine here. Some call it the Drusus Bridge, because it is claimed that Drusus Germanicus built it. Others believe that Willigis, the first Elector of Mainz, is its founder. The mountain on the right is called the Rupert’s Mountain. On top of it one can see the ruins of a nunnery, which was founded in 1148 by Saint Hildegard. Since 1631, when it burned down a second time, it has not been rebuilt.
