Plate 15. View of Thurnberg Castle (Burg Maus) and the area of Welmenach
Color engraving of Thurnberg Castle ("Die Maus" [The Mouse]) on the Rhine River and the environs of the village of Wellmich (Welmenach). The construction of Thurnberg, also called the "Mouse Castle," was begun in the 14th century by Bohemond II, the Elector of Trier, and continued by his successors. The castle served as both a residence and a fortress that helped the Elector enforce tolls on the Rhine.
