Exhibited: The Beethovens on the Rhine (2020). Exhibition text: Beethoven’s connection with Waldstein in Bonn opened doors for him on his arrival in Vienna in 1792. Waldstein was originally from Vienna, and he was friends with many influential aristocratic families there. Through Waldstein, Beethoven met Prince Karl Lichnowsky, who was Beethoven’s most important early patron. Lichnowsky provided Beethoven with accommodation and meals, and later paid him an annual stipend. He was also active in promoting Beethoven’s career, taking him on an extended concert tour in 1796 and introducing him to many of Vienna’s leading aristocratic patrons of music. Beethoven dedicated several of his compositions to Prince Lichnowsky, including his Three Piano Trios, Opus 1, and the “Pathétique” Sonata, Opus 13.
