Plate 04. View of Elfeld and Erbach
Color engraving with a view of the villages of Eltville and Erbach in Germany, from across the Rhine. Elfeld (Eltville) is a particularly ancient town, with traces of habitation dating back to the New Stone Age. It was the residence of the Electors of Mainz, one of whom (Dietrich Schenk von Erbach) lent his name to the nearby village.

- Description in German / English translation: So wie man das Gebiet von Nassau-Usingen verlässt, eröffnet sich der Anblick des reizenden Rheingau, und der auf diesem Blatte vorgestellten zweey Ortschaften Elfeld und Erbach. Ersteres ist ein kleines Städtchen, das, so wie der grösste Theil des Rheingau, dem Churfürsten von Maynz gehört. Unter den Gebäuden, worunter auch mehrere Herrschaftshäuser sind, zeichnet sich die Kirche mit ihrem hohen Thurme aus. Es ist hier auch ein Schloss, das im vorigen Jahrhundert abgebrannt war, nun aber in weit schönerer Gestalt hergestellt ist. Weinbau und Viehzucht machen den grössten Verkehr der Einwohner aus, und verschaffen ihnen eine Art von Wohlstand. Diesem Städtchen zur Linken sieht man hier das Dorf Erbach, in einer ungemein angenehmen Lage, und diesem Orte gegen über mitten im Rhein die Insel Rheinau, die aber auf diesem Blatte nicht ausgedrückt ist. / As soon as one leaves the Nassau-Usingen region, the view opens up onto the lovely Rhinegau, and onto the two towns depicted on this leaf, Elfeld and Erbach. The first is a small town, which like the greatest part of the Rhinegau belongs to the elector of Mainz. Among the buildings, which also encompass several mansions, the church with its high tower stands out. There is also a castle that burned down in the last centur, but now has been rebuild in a much more beautiful form. Growing wine and raising cattle are the inhabitants’ main activity, and this allows them a kind of comfortable living. To the left of this little town one can see the village of Erbach, in a very pleasant setting; opposite this village, in the middle of the Rhine, is the island Rheinau, which, however, cannot be seen on this leaf.
