Before he became Neefe’s pupil, Beethoven received keyboard lessons from Tobias Friedrich Pfeiffer, who came to Bonn in the summer of 1779. Pfeiffer was a tenor singer in the theatrical company based at the Bonn court, and was also a skilled performer on the keyboard and oboe. He was also a resident in the Fischer House. Beethoven’s lessons with Pfeiffer did not take place at any regular hours, but rather whenever Pfeiffer felt in the mood to teach. Occasionally Pfeiffer would return with Beethoven’s father from the wine-house late at night, and would rouse Beethoven from his sleep and keep him at the keyboard until morning.
