- Description
- The Army Corps of Engineers supervised construction of the island. The shoals were enclosed by a seawall three miles long built from 287,000 tons of rock. To build up the island 11 dredges scooped up 20 million cubic feet of sand and mud from around the bay. In this fill was gold washed down from the Sierra Nevada. Treasure Island was a fitting name.
