- Description
- In July 1939, the USS Lexingotn anchored off Treasure Island. The Lexington had visited San Francisco many times. On May 8, 1942, she was damaged and sunk during the Battle of Coral Sea. Treasure Island never became an airport, but is today an important naval base. The Treasure Island Museum in the Administration Building honors the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.
