For art majors and general students. Creative approach to two- and three-dimensional

7. Perspective (1) and Lettering (1)
Scheduled first eight weeks of semester. Perspective: Theory and
practice of representing three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional
surface with both one- and two- point perspective; problems in fields of
architecture, interior decoration, fine and commercial art. Lettering:
Development of technical facility and appreciation of fine lettering
for posters, books, magazines.
8. Costume Design (3)
Prerequisite: Art 3. Individual types, colors, proper line, choice and planning
costumes; history of costume for appreciation, source of ideas for modern
design; costumes for the stage and dance; fashion illustrating and advertising.

9. Garden Design (1)
Principles of art in landscaping home and school grounds; city planning;
planting plan, elevation and perspective drawings.
10. Costume Appreciation (1)
Open to women only. Line, color and texture; effective hairdressing; appropriate
make-up; grooming and care of clothes. Specialists participating; lecture,
demonstration.
11. Pottery (2)
Elementary building processes and surface treatments; firing, development
and use of design criteria; history and appreciation of pottery. (Two 2-hour
lecture-labs)
12. Composition and Design (2)
Prerequisite: Art 6A or 6B. Good taste in design; contemporary industrial
and commercial trends; work with two- and three-dimensional space. Problems
in screen or block printing, posters, mobiles, furniture, display advertising.

14. Drawing and Painting (2)
Prerequisite or concurrently: Art 6A or 6B. Composition and creative activity
with poster paint, chalk, charcoal, ink, crayon. (Two 2-hour lecture labs)
17. Costume Design for Pageantry (1)
Planning of practical costumes for school plays, pageants, and play
days.

45. Appreciation of Interior Design (1)
Appreciation and understanding of design in home planning and replanning
for contemporary and period style. Lectures, demonstrations, field trips.

Art in daily life; motion pictures, demonstrations, and illustrated lectures
on painting, sculpture, city planning, architecture, house and garden, interior
decoration, industrial design, pottery, prints, advertising art, photography,
costume, window display and exhibition techniques.

Drawing, painting, and crafts for children; adjusted to needs of students
enrolled.
101. Photography (2)
Not open to students with credit in Jour 17A. Outdoor and indoor photography;
film and print development; design and interpretation of the photographic

Prerequisite: Art 1,35 or equivalent. Development of creative attitudes
and philosophy of teaching; research in the development of creative thinking
as applied to art education; understanding children's creative expression;
guiding children in art situations; art activities in all grades of elementary
school.
104. Art Education for the Secondary School (3)
Development of creative attitudes and philosophy of teaching art; research
in the development of creative thinking and its implication for art education
at the secondary level; current problems, adolescent and teenage art expressions,
curriculum planning, observations, laboratory. (Three 2-hour lecture-labs)

Prerequisite: Art 3. Recommended: Art 7. Designing stage scenes; modem trends
in scene design; work with light and color, drawing, and model sets. (Two

draped material; fashion illustration; construction from original designs;

in pottery design and construction; use of the potter's wheel. (Two 2-hour

Prerequisite: Art 3. Advanced problems in textile design and screen printing
with dyes; three-dimensional design in advertising, exhibits. (Two 2-hour

113. Studio System (1)
Experience in the ordering, storage, and care of materials, equipment,
and visual aids of an art department. For art majors only. Prerequisite:
Art 5 or 6A or 6B.
114. Drawing and Painting -- Oil (3)
Prerequisite: Art 14. The palette and its possibilities; selecting material
and organizing it into a picture; technical methods; still life, plant life,
the head, abstractions.
115. Illustration (3)
A vocational course; problems of illustration of children's books, magazine
stories, and advertisements in color, and black and white; methods of reproduction
for printing; problems directly with art as a vocation. Prerequisites: Art
12 or 14, 18 or 118.
116. Watercolor Painting and Composition (3)
Prerequisite: Art 114. Exploration of contemporary watercolor techniques;
composition with still life, flowers, figures and other indoor material.
118A-B-C-D. Life Drawing (2-2-2-2)
Figure composition and drawing from nude and costumed figures; charcoal,
ink, and paint. (Two 2-hour lecture-labs)
119A-B. Art Appreciation and History (2-2)
119A is not prerequisite to 119B. Motion pictures and multiple slide projectors
illustrating the arts of different countries and periods; architecture,
sculpture, painting, crafts, and modem mass produced articles in relation
to past art.
130. Crafts for Children (2)
Prerequisites: Art 5 or 6A or 6B; junior standing. Craft materials suited
to elementary school children; three-dimensional art expression and teaching
methods; creating with variety of materials and construction processes;
making classroom stimulating and attractive. Observation in Laboratory School;
evaluating an teaching results.

(a) Prerequisite: Art 114. Landscape composition afrom material around Fresno
city, industrial section, and countryside. (b) Prerequisite: Art 116. Watercolor.

144A-B. Crafts (2-2)
Prerequisite: Art 5 or 6A or 6B. Constructing and experimenting with a variety
of materials; the machine as a creative tool; hand tools; opportunity for
third dimensional inventive and functional design. (a) Leather, textile,
metal and plastics. (b) Wood carving, weaving, screen printing, jewelry
and machine tools. Materials cost approximately $10.
145A-B. Interior Design (3-3)
Prerequisite: Art 3. Recommended: Art 9. (A) Contemporary interior; designing,
selecting and arranging furniture, color and texture, to create a functional
and congenial atmosphere for modern living; period furniture styles in relation
to present trends. (B) Advanced design problems in decoration of rooms for
restaurants, offices and stores; decoration of rooms in home and school
