metal and heat treating and tempering of tools; cutting with torch and brazing.

Prerequisite: AgM 15A-B. (a) Construction and repair of farm structures
and equipment; farm carpentry and installation of utilities. (b) Design
and drawing of farm structures and equipment; engineering principles and
codes; farmstead layout and basic requirements of farm structures. (1 lecture,
3 lab hours)
115A-B. Farm Machinery (2-2)
(1 lecture and 3 laboratory hours weekly.)
Selection, operation, service and major repair of tillage, planting and
haying machinery; field adjustment, operation and service of harvesting
machinery; engineering principles involved and practical solutions to problems.
Prerequisite: AgM 15A-B.
121A-B. Gas and Electric Welding (2-2)
(1 lecture and 3 laboratory hours weekly.)
Safe practices in arc and acetylene welding; use of acetylene torch in Common
farm repair work such as steel welding, brazing, hard facing, heat treating
and cutting; use of stationary and portable are welding equipment for common
welds in all positions with electric are; use of special alloy electrodes
for cast iron and hard facing in repair and construction of farm machinery.
124. Farm Tractors (2)
(1 lecture and 3 laboratory hours weekly.)
Actual operation of farm tractors; gas and diesel in common use in the San
Joaquin Valley; servicing and field adjustments under actual farming conditions.
Required of students planning to use college owned tractors in farming projects.
Laboratory work consists of actual work on the college farm with tools and
equipment.
136. Soils (3)
(2 lecture and 3 laboratory hours weekly.)
Soil types, formation, texture, mechanical and chemical composition; interpretation
of soil maps and their use in the San Joaquin Valley in planning an improvement
program through fertilization.
146. Irrigation (3)
(2 lecture and 3 laboratory, hours weekly.)
Methods of irrigation adapted to the San Joaquin Valley with emphasis on
water requirements of various crops and methods of application. One Saturday
field trip scheduled.
151A-B. Farm Power (2-2)
(1 lecture and 3 laboratory hours weekly.)
a. Principles of the internal combustion engine; adjusting, servicing and
minor repairs practical in farming operations; trouble-shooting and tune-up
of motors. Prerequisites: AgM 115A-B.
b. Overhauling and repairing of farm tractors and engines of the gasoline
and diesel types; pulleys, chains, power take-offs, transmissions and clutches,
and general motor repair work; servicing and repairing of auxiliary power
plants on harvesters, sprayers, hay choppers and other farm machinery under
field conditions. Prerequisite: AgM 151A.
156. Advanced Agricultural Mechanics (3)
(2 lecture and 3 laboratory hours weekly.)
Design and construction of specialized farm equipment. For advanced students
utilizing skills and ideas in construction of specialized farm equipment.
Facilities and instructors in the Engineering Department available in formulating
plans and blueprints; application of sound engineering and mechanical principles
to agricultural equipment. Prerequisite: AgM 115A-B.
159. Pumps and Motors (3)
(2 lecture and 3 laboratory hours weekly.)
Operation and study of centrifugal and deep well turbines; testing of pumps
and motors under operating conditions to determine efficiency of such installation;
various types of single and three-phase motors used on the farm, including
installation, protective devices, maintenance and proper selection of the
motors. Prerequisites: AgM 115A-B, 146.
