ASTRONOMY

10. Liberal Arts Physical Science (3)
Primarily for liberal arts students. Not open to students with credit or concurrent registration in college physics. Prerequisite: elementary high school algebra. Elementary astronomy and physics; mechanical, electrical magnetic, and optical principles; application to everyday experiences. Lecture, demonstration, discussion.

21. Elementary Astronomy (4)
Prerequisite: intermediate algebra. Basic concepts, theories, history, and laws of astronomy. Solar system, stellar evolution, quasars, pulsars, black holes, origin and development of the cosmos. Laboratory includes star and planet observation, lunar observation, physical principles particularly important for astronomy. (3 lecture, 2 lab hours)

106. History of Physical Science (3)
The development of our understanding of the physical world from ancient times to the 20th century with an emphasis on astronomy, mechanics, thermodynamics, and the nature of matter. An exploration of the evolution of ideas.

108. Impact of Science Upon Society (3)
Basic philosophical issues and social problems attending the growth of science; study of areas in the history of science which have posed important questions for man, with special attention to the writings of eminent scientists.

180T. Topics in Physical Science (1-3; max total 9)
Detailed discussion of special topics within the realm of physical science.
