Principal concepts and problems, including personality, social groups, social
change and social processes.
111. Race and Cultural Relations (3)
Prerequisite: Soc 1A or Anthro 2, or permission of instructor. Racial
and cultural minority groups in the United States; problems of education,
social adjustment, family life, relations in industry, race consciousness,
race and cultural prejudice, tension areas, assimilation; race problems
in international relations.
120A-B. Introduction to Social Work (2-2) or (3-3)
(a) History and philosophy of social work; social case work, group work,
research. Field of social work: family welfare, child welfare, living conditions,
recreation, industrial welfare, migrants, racial groups, rural. (b) Federal,
state, and community organizations and social welfare agencies. 120A is
not a prerequisite to 120B.
125. Social Welfare (2 or 3)
Developing skills in practical social welfare; practical social work
for those already in the field and for students with sufficient background.
Prerequisite: Permission of instructor.
131. Marriage and the Family (1-2-3)
First six weeks will deal with physiological and psychological aspects
of marriage; following 12 weeks will deal with the sociological aspects.
140. Rural Problems (2)
Characteristics of rural life; rural problems; rural housing, health
and recreation; rural social planning; migration and migratory labor.
141. Urban Problems (2)
Prerequisites: Sociol. 1A-B. A study of social organization and problems
of the modern city; growth of cities; problems arising from congestion of
population; segregation of social and economic groups; impact of urban environment
upon human behavior

154. Adult Education (2)
History and philosophy of the Adult Education movement in the United States
and certain foreign countries. Especial emphasis upon the California program,
the forum movement in the United States and the Adult Education program
in the Scandinavian countries,

195. Honors Course (1-2)
Open to social science majors in senior year with at least a B average
in department.
