5. Public School Art (2) (See Survey courses.)
This course should be selected by students whose main interest in Art is
in relation to public school teaching. This course is not a series of problems
to be redictated to pupils of the Elementary School. It is designed, not
to equip teachers without further training to teach Art in the grades, but
to give the prospective teacher an understanding of Art principles and an
appreciation of the scope and possibilities of the subject which will enable
him to teach sympathetically and intelligently under supervision.
6A-B. Art Structure (2-2) (See Survey courses.)
a. Recommended to those students whose major interest in Art is in relation
to the home, Interior Decoration, Costume, etc.
b. Recommended for those students whose major interest in Art is professional
or commercial. It is of special value to Commerce students interested in
posters and advertising layout, and to Industrial Arts students with special
interest in furniture design.
7. Perspective (1) and Lettering (1)
Perspective. Mechanical and freehand perspective and architectural rendering.
Planned to cover a field which will be helpful in later courses requiring
a knowledge of perspective.
Lettering. An appreciative study through exercises of fine examples of lettering
such as manuscripts, cards, advertisements, and posters. Emphasis is placed
on modern lettering.
Students may elect either half of this course separately for one unit.
8. Costume Design (3)
Primarily intended as a study of costume for the individual, although it
also concerns students interested in fashion illustration and advertising.
Study of individual types, colors that are becoming and appropriate; use
of proper line for various individuals, and the choice and planning of costumes
for different occasions. The history of costume for a broader understanding
and appreciation as well as for inspiration for modern design and its application
to contemporary trends. Beginning stage designs, such as masks, costumes
for the dance and pageants. Prerequisite: Survey course.
9. Garden Design (1)
The principles of art applied to the landscaping of home and school grounds.
Making of architectural drawings showing painting, ground plans. and elevation
and perspective drawings. Prerequisite: Survey course.
10. Costume Appreciation (1)
How to dress to look one's best on all occasions: How to bring out the best
lines of the figure; how to choose the most becoming colors; bow to use
make-up appropriately; and how to dress the hair most effectively. This
is a lecture, discussion, and demonstration course. Costumes are selected
and modeled according to the individual. Included in Art 8. Students taking
Art 8 will not be given credit for Art 10.
11. Pottery (2)
An introductory course in pottery to study its vast possibilities as
a creative and functional medium. Making of shapes, coiling, building, pressing,
casting, decoration with underglaze colors, glazing, glaze firing, and stacking
the kiln. Prerequisite: Survey course.
12. Composition and Design (2)
An elementary understanding of modern commercial and industrial problems;
the demands made upon the designer by the trade; the materials used; and
the breadth of the field. Contemporary tendencies in design, the materials
(metals, glass, porcelain, enamel, wood, paper, cloth, plastics) and techniques
are studied in such problems as store signs, window displays, trade marks,
posters, silver service, simple furniture, gas heaters, etc. Prerequisite:
Survey course.
14. Drawing and Painting (2)
The study of representation of still life, animals, figure, head, etc.,
in charcoal, chalk, tempera and other media. Compositional values stressed.
Prerequisite: Survey course.
17. Costume Design for Pageantry (1)
The planning of practical costumes for school plays, pageants, and play
days. Every teacher should know how to assemble quickly costumes of inexpensive
materials, how to use over old costumes effectively and how to make costumes
of discarded materials in order to be able to advise and suggest ways to
help children to do their own costuming.

Figure sketching from the model.
45. Appreciation of Home Decoration (1)
Discussion of the relationships and arrangement of materials of home decoration
with emphasis on contemporary with some consideration of period furniture.
76. Art for Enjoyment (1)
A series of lectures and demonstrations on the various phases of art such
as painting, sculpture, costume, interior decorating, pottery, textiles,
books, prints, etc. Designed to give an intelligent background to the layman
for the enjoyment and use of art in daily life.
100A-B. Art for Teachers in Service (1-1)
Drawing, painting, and crafts for children. The content of this course may
be changed to suit the demand for various types of work on the part of the
group.
101. Photography (2)
Taking pictures with school camera equipment, developing films, making prints,
weekly class criticism. Class problems include portraits, landscapes, photographs
for magazine illustration and for advertising, still life compositions,
enlarging, copying. Prerequisite: Survey course.
103. Art Education in Elementary Grades (1)
Observation in demonstration school, practice in teaching art to small groups
of children and in managing extra-curricular art activities. Evaluating
art experiences; stimulating child imagination and creative expression;
making art an integral part of the school program; discussion of objectives,
sup- plies and equipment. Should be taken first semester of junior year.
104. Art Education in Secondary School (1)
Recent trends and problems in Art Teaching. The art needs of the High School
student and of his school and community. Demonstrations; observations, field
trips.
107. Stage Design (2)
The principles of art applied to the stage, the designing of stage scenes,
the study of modern trends in scene design, work with light and color, drawing,
and model sets. Prerequisite: Survey course.
108. Advanced Costume Design (2)
Designing for advanced seasonal styles; sketching from clraped material
and modeling on the figure; a study of the possibilities of all kinds and
weights of materials and their application to costume. Most of the semester
is given to modern designing of costumes for various occasions. Some study
and designing of costumes for plays. Prerequisites: Survey course, Art 8.
111A. Pottery (2)
Advanced clay work, simiilar to Art 11, involving greater skill and opportunity
for individual creation. Making glazes, throwing on the wheel, moulding,
casting, and the study of historical examples. Prerequisites: Survey course
and Art 11.
111B. Ceramic Sculpture (2)
Students work for fine sculptural design while building figures, animals,
and groups. Prerequisite: Survey course.
112. Composition and Design (2)
A continuation of Art 12. Advanced problems such as wallpaper, decorative
wall hangings, maps, lighting fixtures, textile designs, furniture, hooked
rugs and jewelry are selected. Prerequisites: Art 6a, Art 12.
113. Studio System (1)
For Art majors. Care of an art department, making of requisitions for art
material-studying sources of supply and proper conservation, or making of
slides and photographic enlargements for department use. Prerequisite: Survey
course.
114. Drawing and Painting (3)
Medium, oil. Exploration of the palette and its possibilities. How to see
things in an exciting and satisfying way. How to select material and organize
it into a picture. Technical methods. Subject matter, still life, plant
life, the head, abstractions.
115. Illustration (3)
A vocational course consummating several years study of drawing and composition.
Study of problems of illustration of children's books, magazine stories,
and advertisements in color and black and white. Methods of reproduction
for printing. Problems directly concerned with making a living by the practice
of Art. Prerequisites: Survey course, Art 14 or 12, and Art 116b (Life Drawing).
116. Drawing and Painting (3)
Watercolor. Technical training for fresh direct statement. Composition with
still life, flowers and other indoor material. Prerequisites: Survey course,
Art 14, Art 114.
118A-B-C-D. Life Drawing (2-2-2-2)
Life drawing from nude and costumed figure. Charcoal, ink, poster paint,
oil. Figure composition.
119A-B. Art Appreciation and History (2-2)
Lectures, illustrated with slides following the Art Spirit down through
the ages as it manifests itself in different coiintries and periods, expressing
sensitively the inner life of the race. Aimed to develop cultural backgrolind
and visual enjoyment. Text, Art Through the Ages, Gardner. Each semester
all students in this course will be expected to go on a one-day field trip
to San Francisco Museums. Total transportation cost paid by each student
will be about $1.00.
130. Crafts for Children (2)
Practice in creative use of materials and processes that are suited
to needs and interests of children. Selection of illustrative material that
is fine and of interest to children. Making the classroom a stimulating
and attractive place. Observation in Demonstration School. Evaluating the
results of art teaching. Prerequisite: Art 5 or 6a or 6b. Should be taken
in junior year.
131A-B. Outdoor Sketching (2-2)
a. Landscape composition in oil from material around Fresno city, industrial
section, and countryside. Transportation provided by student. Prerequisites:
Survey course, Art 14, Art 114.
b. Similar to 131a except that the medium is watercolor. Prerequisites:
Survey course, Art 14, Art 131A, and Art 116A is suggested.
144A-B. Crafts (2-2)
For those who get pleasure from constructing and experimenting with a variety
of materials. Recognition of the machine as a creative tool along with hand
tools gives an opportunity to express feeling for inventive and functional
design third dimensionally.
a. Leather, textile, metal and plastics.
b. Wood carving, weaving, screen printing, jewelry and machine tools.
Materials for either of the sections will cost approximately $10. Prerequisite:
One of the Survey courses.
145A-B. Interior Decoration (3-3)
a. Study of contemporary interior. Decoration for home, apartment or room.
Designing, selecting and arranging of furniture, color and texture, to create
a functional and congenial atmosphere for modern living. Study of period
furniture and styles in relation to the present trends. Prerequisite: Survey
course. Art 12 and Art 7 suggested.
b. Advanced study of design problems in the decorations of rooms for public
use, as tea rooms and cafes, and actual work in the decoration of rooms
in the home and in the social rooms of the school. Prerequisite: Art 145a.
