134. Structure of English (3)
Not applicable to the English major. Includes pronunciation and the system of word and sentence formation, spelling, styles and varieties of English (such as Mexican-American and Black English); linguistics and reading, a review of traditional grammar, and an introduction to modern transformational grammar.

135. General Linguistics (3)
Human language and its characteristics. The nature and description of phonological, grammatical and semantic systems. Procedures for establishing language relationships and investigation of linguistic changes. Relationship between linguistics and allied areas.

137. American English (3)
Prerequisite: Ling 134 or 135. Studies in the linguistic structure of modern English.

138. History of the English Language (3)
Study of the development of the sound system, grammar, vocabulary, and writing system of English.

139A. Topics in Phonology (4; max total 8 if no topic repeated)
Prerequisite: Ling 135. Study of phonetic feature of languages; phonetic, phonetic, and practical alphabets.

139B. Topics in Grammar (4, max total 8 if no topic repeated)
Prerequisite: Ling 135. Theory and practice in the description of grammatical systems. Comparison of approaches. Practical experience with data.

139C. Field Methods in Linguistics (4)
Prerequisite: permission of instructor. Theory and practice in the collection and analysis of linguistic data.
