Prerequisite: admission to credential program (concurrent enrollment in E Ed 131T allowed). Function of education in American culture; role of the school and teacher; impact of social conflict on the school's function; relationship between school and community; designated field experiences.

105. Development and Learning (3)
Prerequisite: admission to credential program (concurrent enrollment in E Ed 131T allowed). Facts, ideas, and principles fundamental to an understanding of educational procedures in teaching and learning, and to the growth and development of children.

107A. Proseminar in Curriculum and Instructional Materials (3)
Prerequisite: E Ed 105, 132A (concurrently) ; admission to credential program. Current conceptions of reading, spelling, written and oral communications; their roles in the elementary curriculum.

107B. Proseminar in Curriculum and Instructional Materials (4)
Prerequisite: E Ed 107A, 139B concurrently); admission to credential program. Current conceptions of history, geography, civics and the sciences; their roles in the elementary curriculum.

120T. Problems in Elementary Education (3; repeatable with different topics)
Prerequisite: admission to credential program; E Ed 105. Study in depth of various areas in elementary education including social studies, science, culturally disadvantaged, kindergarten, children's literature, childhood education, mathematics, nursery schools, language arts, classroom organization and management, curriculum, storytelling, bilingual-bicultural education.

122F. Field Work in Outdoor Education (1-2; max total 2)
Prerequisite: E Ed 105 or S Ed 152; permission of instructor. Practice at camp with responsibilities of counseling, camp leadership, curriculum planning and evaluation; utilization of resource people from several disciplines.

131T. Observation and Participation (l; max total 3)
Prerequisite: permission of instructor. Directed observation and participation to prepare For teaching, develop traits and qualities for successful teaching, provide basic experiences for interpreting educational theories. These include tutorial field experience, psychological foundations observations, sociological foundations observations, field work in outdoor education.

132A. Student Teaching in Elementary Schools (3)
Prerequisite: E Ed 107A (concurrently) ; admission to credential program, Observation and participation and a minimum of 45 clock hours of directed teaching with one hour conference weekly.

132B. Student Teaching in Elementary Schools (2-12)
Prerequisite: E Ed 132A or equivalent; one semester residence; admission to credential program. Directed teaching, participation, and teaching in public schools under supervision. One unit of credit equivalent to 22.5 clock hours of directed teaching.

135. Audio-Visual Education (2)
Evaluation, selection, and utilization of various types of contemporary instructional materials, systems, and equipment. Laboratory experiences in the operation of equipment and materials design.

136. Multicultural Education (3)
Helps teachers cope effectively with diverse student needs in a plural society. Considers ethnic, socio-economic, sex, religious, other subcultural differences and problems of curriculum and instruction in multi-group classrooms.

Prerequisite: permission of instructor. Evaluation and use of basic reference tools found in the school library; selection, critical evaluation, and sources.

Prerequisite: permission of instructor. Selection and use of materials for school media centers according to the needs of children and the educational goals of the school program.

143. Literature for Young People (3)
Prerequisite: permission of instructor. Survey of selected materials appropriate to the needs, interests, and abilities of young people. Use of books for curricular, leisure, and guidance purposes, practice in reviewing media and in giving book talks.

144. Advanced Cataloging (3)
Prerequisite; permission of instructor. Extensive practice in cataloging, with emphasis upon resources requiring special description, such as audio-visual, resource material, and pamphlets.

145. School Library Practicum (9)
Prerequisite: permission of instructor. Observation and practice work in selected school libraries; includes at least 180 clock hours of supervised library experience under the supervision of a credentialed librarian.

147. Administration of School Library Services (3)
Prerequisite; admission of credential program. The materials-centered library; effective organization and maintenance based on standards, aims, and policies for the library in relation to curriculum, budgeting, reporting, and evaluating.

148. Organization of School Library Materials (3)
Prerequisite: Educ 147 and admission to credeniial program. Acquisition, cataloging, (classification, and allied processes for a materials-centered school library. Practice in cataloging and classifying library materials; development of a sample catalog.

149. The School Library as an Educational Force (3)
Prerequisite: E Ed 148 and admission to credential program or permission of instructor. Depth study of the role of the school library; functions, aims and policies for libraries in relation to curriculum. teachers. and children.

151. Organization of Programs for Young Children (3)
Prerequisite: admission to credential program. A study of varied types of organization and administrative patterns in programs for young children. Principles of democratic supervision and policies related to purposes and organization, licensing, equipment, records, financing, parent and community relations, personnel policies, and Staff development.

156. The Teaching of Reading (3)
Prerequisite: admission to credential program; E Ed 110 (Option 1), concurrent enrollment). Designed for candidates for multiple subject credential. The nature of reading; methods and materials for teaching reading skills; provision for individual differences (ethnic, socio-economic, dialectal); theories, programs, and organization; stimulation of interest; improvement in oral reading and phonics.

164. Tutorial Reading (3)
(Same as S Ed 164) Prerequisite: E Ed or S Ed 155. Designed to give the student direct involvement with a child who has reading problems; practical experience that uses-the knowledge, skills and techniques obtained in the prerequisite basic reading course. Testing, diagnosis and remediation techniques are stressed. (2 lecture, 2 lab hours)

Prerequisite: E Ed or S Ed 156 and permission of instructor. Study of the theory of teaching as it relates to the psychology of reading, thinking, and learning; the structure and dialects of the English language; cultural differences; motivation of children, colleagues, and communities.

175. Seminar and Practicum in Elementary Teaching (6-8)
Prerequisite: baccalaureate degree (concurrent registration in E Ed 267 required), or permission of instructor. On-school site seminar and practicum to train teachers for service in economically depressed areas. Growth and development, principles of learning, curricular and methodologicd focus on language development and reading.

Prerequisite: graduate standing. Seminar in the study of the English language arts. Objectives, curriculum, materials, and research in oral and written communication; project required.

234. Practicum in Reading Disabilities (3)
(Same as S Ed 234) Prerequisite: E Ed 136, 224 or permission of instructor. Laboratory experiences in the diagnosis and correction of reading disability cases under supervision. (2 lecture. 2 lab hours)

244. Research in Reading Curriculum (3)
(Same as S Ed 244) Prerequisite: E Ed 174, 214, 534, and permission of instructor. Study of selected curricula; planning curriculum in reading; effective ways of dealing with the Functions and duties of reading specialists and consultants.

250. Elementary School Curriculum Development (3)
Prerequisite: teaching credential. Seminar on concepts and principles of curriculum planning; evaluation of processes and programs; availability and use of resources; innovations and research in curriculum development. Project required.

254. Supervised Field Experience in Reading (3)
(Same as S Ed 254) Prerequisite: E Ed 224, 244 and permission of instructor. Intensive varied supervised field experiences involving diagnosis and treatment of reading difficulties; development or refinement of reading programs; evaluation of reading instruction; application of interpersonal communications and group process skills.

267. Teaching Internship (3-12)
Prerequisite: approval by departmental admission and internship committees, E Ed 111A-B-C, E Ed 268 (concurrently). One-half day teaching experience with contract For one school year under supervision of college and assigned district personnel.

271. Comparative Cultures in Early Childhood (3)
Ways in which culture affects personality, language and cognitive development. Similarities and differences in education and socialization in a variety of cultural settings are studied. Curricula for multicultural education in ECE are included. (2 lecture, 2 lab hours)
