1. Mass Communications (3)
Survey of the mass media of communication, including newspapers, magazines, radio and television; related agencies and fields of communicative enterprise, such as press associations, feature syndicates, advertising, and public relations.

2. Interpreting Current Events (3)
Analysis and discussion of major world news events as they occur with readings from periodicals reflecting various shades of opinion; analysis of various media for objectivity, emphasis, and political or nationalistic coloration.

8A-B. Reporting (3-3)
Prerequisite: Engl 1, sophomore standing. Preparation of varied stories used by newspapers; analysis of news sources; techniques of interviewing; problems encountered by reporters; ethical and legal considerations; coverage of some campus and community functions. (2 lecture, 2 lab hours)

17. Introductory and Publications Photography (3)
Survey and instruction in beginning publications photography; use of camera equipment for black-and -white photographs; lab experience in basic processing and printing. (2 lecture, 3 lab hours)

Prerequisites: pass Language Qualification Exam, Jour 110. Preparation of copy, headlines, and photos for newspapers and other publications; advanced concepts of grammar and style; legal and ethical issues of publications; basic publications layout and graphic design. Prerequisite: Jour 114. Individually supervised editing of copy and writing headlines. College newspaper used as a laboratory. (hours arranged)

116. Photo Editing (3)
Study of photographs and other visual elements in publications; principles of graphic design. Practical experience in selecting photographs and design elements for content, aesthetic values, and technical quality. (3 lecture, 2 lab hours)

117. Advanced Press Photography (3)
Prerequisite: Jour 17. Use of news cameras for photographic reporting; evaluation and preparation of pictures for publication; field and laboratory experience in flash and extension lighting, filters; advanced uses and processing of high speed films, efficient processing methods. (2 lecture, 3 lab hours)

Prerequisite: Jour 17 or permission of instructor. Field and laboratory work in the production of the picture story and essay; magazine and news reporting on assignment; press and investigative photography. (l lecture, 3 lab hours)

Prerequisite: permission of instructor. Practice in editorial leadership, newspaper writing assignments, and newspaper production techniques. Department newspaper used for laboratory purposes. (1 lab hour, 10 hours arranged)

Writing and marketing feature material for magazines, newspaper supplements, and syndicates.

Overview of all aspects of the field of advertising. Study of history, agent-client relationships, media, relationship to the behavioral sciences, production of copy and layouts, and advertising legislation and responsibility.

Prerequisites: Jour 145, permission of instructor. Print advertising copy writing for a variety of print media. The role of the copy writer; development of creative strategy; laws regulating print advertising.

Prerequisite: Jour 145. Media planning and buying for advertising media. Evaluating and selecting media to meet specific marketing and communication goals; designing specific media plans and making buys in various media.

173. Public Relations: Programs and Problems (3)
Prerequisites: Jour 8, 100W, 113. Development, assessment, and evaluation of of public relations in business, education, philanthropy, and other field practice.

175. Advertising Campaigns (3)
Prerequisites: Jour 145, 155. Background, research, planning, and preparation of advertising campaigns. Team campaign, in-advertising agency groups with client-agency set-up; analysis of campaigns and their effectiveness.

181. Laws of Communication (3)
Study of federal and state laws and regulations that apply to the media, covering such topics as freedom of information, libel, right to privacy, fair trial-free press, copyright, obscenity and indecency, advertising regulation, and broadcast law and regulation.

Historical background of American press; development from colonial to modern times; newspapers and allied media as political and social forces.

Not open to student with credit in Jour 185 prior to fall 1972. Study of the nature, effects, and measurement of U.S. public opinion; various theories on relationships between voter attitudes and public opinion polls; the practice of selected polling techniques.
