Chichester Cathedral
After a serious fire, in which the collapsed roof had caused much superficial damage, the choir at Chichester was refaced by rebuilding the clerestory and the choir arcades. Caen stone was used for repairs to the wall, and the piers were reinforced by the addition of Purbeck marble shafts. Only the geometry of the new semicircular arches and the old Norman work belongs to Romanesque. The new work, with its capitals deeply carved with foliage, and the use of slender marble shafting, belongs to Gothic.
