Notes
  • The map shows the expanse of the rivers from Coblenz to Mainz, including the famous “Mouse Tower” near Bingen. The tower left in ruins by the French army in 1689 and not rebuilt until 1855, so it did not exist in Beethoven’s lifetime. Other villages and ruins (marked by the red dots on the map) that are depicted in the following engravings include Lohnstein, Braubach, Boppart, Rheinfels, Caub, Bacharach, and Astmannshausen.
