Winchester Cathedral
One of the last examples of the Gothic art, Bishop Fox's chantry stands beside his choir at Winchester. Beneath it lies a figure of Death, and at this end, behind the actual chapel, sits a small room, within which the Bishop, in his old age and partial blindness, would retire for rest and meditation. Albeit, Bramante and Raphael had belonged to his same generation. Their Renaissance, together with the pressures for a reformed church in England, were to shatter Bishop Fox's gothic dreams forever and from this point forward, return to the origins of Rome.
