Schauder volle Abbildung der durch ein Wolkenbruch verunglückten Gegend bey Wien
Notes
Exhibit text (Beethoven's Vienna): According to the Viennese hydrobiologist Severin Hohensinner, the engraving probably depicts the flood from 1785 caused by heavy rains in the Danube tributary Wienfluss (the Vienna River). Between 1768 and 1789, thirty-six floods were documented, seven of them very severe. In 1787 the second highest flood of the last 500 years occurred, prompting a series of hydraulic construction of dikes to protect part of the city. In the engraving a horse flees to higher land, and drowned and drowning citizens are depicted. The Glacis (Esplanade) is completely under water.
