Exhibited: The Beethovens on the Rhine (2020). Exhibition text: Stephan von Breuning, the second youngest of the four Breuning children, was to become one of Beethoven’s most important friends in his later years. Stephan moved to Vienna in 1801 where he resumed contact with Beethoven. He revised the original libretto of Beethoven’s opera Leonore for its second version in 1806, and he was also the dedicatee of the Violin Concerto, Opus 61. Although there was a break in their friendship between 1815 and 1825, Stephan and his young son Gerhard (1813–1892) were frequent visitors to Beethoven’s residence in his final years. Gerhard later published his personal recollections of Beethoven, whom he remembered fondly.
