Cathedral at Durham
The use of shafting, together with recessed panels, to reduce the weight of a high building is illustrated in the west towers of Durham, which reached near completion at this date. The pointed arch is used here in an elongated form in both the window and wall arcading-the first appearance of another characteristic Early English invention: the lancet window.
