Dysert O'Dea Caslte

The Norse forms of decorative art were clearly a separate development from those of Mediterranean Europe. The same birdlike form which is evident in the sanctuary knocker at Durham is again seen here in a Romanesque doorway in Ireland. It is this echo of a Nordic culture which provided one of the major influences in breaking out of Roman, and of Saxon, geometric form, and paved the way for Gothic.
