- Two of Beethoven’s colleagues in the court orchestra, Bernard Romberg and his cousin Andreas were both already internationally acclaimed soloists by the time they came to Bonn in 1790. Bernard was a virtuoso cellist who performed with the Bonn orchestra until 1792, when he resumed his solo career. He was also a composer and the author of a much-used cello treatise, the Méthode de violoncelle. Bernard gave the first Viennese performance of Beethoven’s Cello Sonatas Opus 5 in 1797, during a visit to Vienna, with Beethoven himself performing at the piano.
