Winchester Cathedral

On a smaller scale the lierne vaults of Winchester continue with this complicated work beside the Lady Chapel, in a chantry built for Bishop Langton. Chantry chapels allowed masses and prayers to be said for the souls of those who subscribed. At Durham, for instance, the monks were under the obligation of celebrating over seven thousand masses for the dead each year. An important person looked for special privileges and built a personal chantry.
