The Joads stop to fix a flat tire, from The Grapes of Wrath, vol.2, p. 430, illustrated edition. Thomas Hart Benton, a native of eastern Oklahoma, was assigned to draw archetypal Oklahomans for 20th Century Fox as the studio believed that would make the casting more accurate. "Tom and Al worked well together. They put stones behind the wheels, put the jack under the front axle, and lifted the weight off the limp casing."
