The1939 first edition dust cover illustration for John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, designed by American artist and children's book illustrator Elmer Hader (1889–1973). Steinbeck personally requested Hader for the project after admiring his work on a previous book. Hader also designed covers for other Steinbeck works, including The Long Valley (1938), East of Eden (1952), and The Winter of Our Discontent (1961)
