Bolton Priory

Not all of the great abbeys survived intact. Their abbots, priors, and brethren were pensioned off or found new livings serving the parish churches. Although the loss in architecture brought to ruin was tremendous, what had become a constricting and ruinously expensive State within a State was destroyed. No longer were huge sums of the country's revenue paid to Rome, and the lands owned by the church were returned to the State.
