The Bishop's Palace
The wars of the Roses (1455-1485) followed the defeat of English arms in France. They were conducted by the rival Houses of York and Lancaster for the throne of England, each side obtaining power by force, or increasing their estates by marriage. While the two royal families fought it out, the Church looked to its defenses once again, and at Salisbury the Bishop, building on the foundations of the previous century, erected this fortified house.
