The Banqueting House, Whitehall Palace
The simplicity of Inigo Jones' work at the Queen's House was maintained here at Whitehall, with only the garlanded upper frieze showing elements of gaiety. There was to be an almost total rejection of the Baroque movement in England-except possibly with interiors and, in fact, some authorities will argue that there was no real English Baroque. Within the Banqueting House is a great ceiling painted by Rubens and here there are indeed hints of Baroque style.
