Worcester Catheral

At Worcester in these days two end bays, which survived the thirteenth century rebuilding of the Norman cathedral, there is a remarkable combination of the round and the pointed arch. It was soon realized that the use of the pointed arch resulted in a reduced weight of wall, and that it much improved the practicability of vaulting over rectangular bays. Here is the pointed arch, particularly the containing arch of the triforium stage, is also being used for visual correspondence with the main arcade and with the overall form of the vaulted bay. The actual vaulting belongs to the later rebuilding.
