Lincoln Cathedral
The great vault of the nave and aisles, buttressed from outside, and the use of Purbeck marble columns with a high load bearing capacity combine to give the Lincoln a supremacy which later, more complete examples of Early English work can never equal. There is here an atmosphere of challenge and response at the very frontiers of Gothic development which makes this religious building great as engineering and great as architecture.
