- SUBJECT BIO - Mitsuyo Nakai was born in Washington state, in a lumber community, to parents who were both from Wakayama prefecture. When she was in high school, the family moved to California, and after staying with a relative on a farm in Venice, the family moved to Terminal Island, where both parents worked in the canneries. Along with the other Nisei children from Terminal Island, she attended San Pedro high school. In addition to taking care of the household tasks, she held several jobs after school and on weekends. After her marriage, she attended a school for physical therapists and started her own practice in Elsinore in 1939, while her husband continued to work on Terminal Island. The family was interned at Manzanar, and her two sons were born there. After the war, they returned to Elsinore, where she reestablished her practice, forming a partnership with her husband who also trained as a physical therapist. - *** File: timnakai7.mp3 Audio Segments and Topics: (0:00-4:02)... Nakai bought the business in Elsinore because she felt it was necessary to support the family. When the war started her husband lost his job and they started working together. She has worked all her life. When she was 8 years old she cooked for the family and helped on the ranch. Her father taught her a strong work ethic. She feels that she learned a good lesson form him and is happy she can help her children now. She will only help them with necessities. (4:02-6:42)... At the time of the interview, Nakai's husband was retired. She was always independent. Her husband would do the shopping and take the kids to football games. She has always felt that their relationship was 50/50 pretty equal. At the time she started her business, she thought that she was the one that would have to support and raise the children. (6:42-10:12)... She talks about raising her children. She kept the kids off the street because she was too busy with work to watch them. The girls helped with cooking and cleaning and her boys would come to the office and help cleanup. One of her sons cooks really well. They were also responsible for the dishes and making their beds. Her kids were involved in Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts. She thinks this was a good way to learn because it provided supervision and friends. (10:12-11:15)... Nakai was the one to discipline the children. She would scold them when they were too relaxed with their studies. The boys had a little more freedom then the girls.
