St Laurence's Church at Bradford on Avon
During its occupation as a school, the church's narrow chancel arch was pulled down and a fireplace inserted; an upper floor, reached by an outside stair, was also added. These have now been cleared away, and the interior returned to its original ample form. The dark chancel, with its single small window, emphasizes the shrine-like quality of the space, which in its own troubled time had much in common with the Christianity of the catacombs.
